Battery drains because of gps

Battery drains a lot
Recording data during journey might fail if app is not opened before journey. Then whats the purpose of having an app with GPS on all the time.
App should turn on gps only when app is opened. Then I will use this app. Else I am ok to pay extra bucks instead of having a dead battery.
